Bihar’s government is embarking on an ambitious project to convert eight major dams and reservoirs into tourist attractions, promising a surge in eco-tourism and regional development. Announced recently, this step responds to the central government’s call for ‘water tourism’ to sustain dams and invigorate local economies.
The selected sites boast stunning natural features: Durgawati Reservoir, Valmikinagar Barrage, Gangaji Rajgirh Reservoir, Khadgpur Lake, Kundghat Reservoir, Garhi Upper Kiul Reservoir, Morwe Reservoir, Odhni Dam, and Fulwaria Dam. These spots, rich in scenic beauty and water resources, hold immense potential for activities like boating, angling, and nature trails.
To drive this forward, a steering committee under the Chief Secretary’s leadership was constituted. Water Resources Department acts as the nodal body, coordinating with Tourism, Environment and Forests, Energy, Home Affairs, PHED, Art and Culture, Roads, and Rural Development departments.
Departments are tasked with preparing comprehensive plans for site enhancement, execution, management, and upkeep. This collaborative effort is poised to give Bihar’s dam tourism a professional framework, elevating its national profile.
Prioritizing sustainability, the project incorporates green infrastructure, local community participation, and stringent safety measures. Benefits include site upgrades, biodiversity conservation, diverse tourism offerings, and job creation for residents. Bihar’s dams could soon become must-visit destinations, fostering economic prosperity alongside environmental stewardship.
