Senior CPI(M) leader Vrinda Karat unleashed a blistering attack on the Modi government Wednesday, charging it with muzzling dissent in Parliament while pushing opaque trade pacts with the United States.
From Udaipur, Karat zeroed in on Lok Sabha dynamics. The opposition leader’s platform, she claimed, is being curtailed deliberately. ‘BJP dictates what issues we can raise, sidelining real concerns,’ she told media persons. This approach, according to her, undermines the foundational spirit of legislative discourse.
Parliament’s functionality is ‘deteriorating rapidly,’ Karat warned. Vital traditions like thorough deliberations on major bills are fading. Fewer meeting days, coerced committee reviews, and evasion of serious topics all contribute to what she calls a ‘crisis of parliamentary soul.’
The spotlight fell heavily on the India-US trade negotiations. Karat branded the emerging deal as lopsided and shrouded in mystery. ‘We’re learning details from Trump’s tweets, not our own government,’ she quipped. Conflicting messages—from early hints to Goyal’s joint statement tease—have left the public guessing.
‘Tariff consensus? Non-tariff agreements? Where’s the full disclosure?’ Karat probed. She accused authorities of concealing negotiation intricacies, depriving citizens of informed consent on deals impacting millions.
Optimism flowed when discussing Kerala’s electoral battleground. Karat hailed the LDF’s track record after back-to-back victories. ‘Welfare initiatives speak for themselves. Voters will reward performance, potentially granting us a historic third term,’ she forecasted.
As national politics heats up, Karat’s intervention highlights fault lines over governance transparency, trade diplomacy, and regional power plays. Her voice amplifies opposition demands for accountability in India’s democratic institutions.
