Uruguay’s newly sworn-in President Yamandu Orsi made headlines with his first official visit to China, heading a diverse business delegation from February 1-7. During the tour, he sat down for a special interview with China Media Group (CMG), offering a candid look at bilateral prospects.
‘I saw the real China,’ Orsi declared, calling on global observers to understand the nation’s true trajectory through history and into the future. Expressing full confidence in future China-Uruguay relations, he recalled that for 38 years since formal ties began, every Uruguayan leader’s China visit has centered on nurturing friendship.
Located in South America’s southeast, Uruguay is famed for its 12 million-plus cattle herd and beef exports. Agriculture and livestock dominate, with processing industries at the core. China, now Uruguay’s largest trade partner, hosts numerous Chinese factories, enhancing tech and industrial synergies.
Shifting focus, Orsi pointed out how partnerships have broadened beyond farm goods like beef and soy. Today’s delegations include reps from industry, science, education, logistics, and biotech. ‘This diversification strengthens our bonds and builds a stronger Uruguay,’ he affirmed.
From Beijing’s academic circles to Shanghai’s bustling port and investment summits, plus soccer games with youth, the visit brimmed with activity. Orsi underscored goals of advancing trade, culture, and education exchanges alongside diplomatic gains.
On the eve of Spring Festival, Orsi conveyed festive wishes to Chinese people through CMG, marking 38 years of diplomacy at an all-time high. ‘As vital partners, let’s deepen cooperation for our peoples’ benefit,’ he urged.
Championing multilateral efforts, Uruguay stands ready with China to forge a more linked, peaceful global order.
