Bangladesh Cricket Board chief Animul Islam’s itinerary for February 15 includes a flight to Colombo for one of cricket’s fiercest rivalries: India versus Pakistan in the 2026 T20 World Cup at R. Premadasa Stadium.
Speaking to Prothom Alo, Islam disclosed receiving an official ICC invite. The event doubles as a summit for Asia’s cricket elite—leaders from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka will convene, blending match enjoyment with strategic dialogues.
Islam highlighted the ICC’s directive: “Representatives from these five key Asian boards will assemble on the 15th for the India-Pakistan clash, watch together, and hold talks.”
The timing is poignant, following a spat between BCCI and BCB over Mustafizur Rahman’s IPL release by KKR. Escalations saw BCB push ICC to relocate matches from India to Sri Lanka—rejected outright. Consequently, Scotland filled Bangladesh’s spot in another tournament.
Tensions eased via backchannel negotiations, boosted by PCB’s supportive boycott threat against India. ICC waived penalties on Bangladesh, Pakistan committed to the India game, and future perks emerged: Bangladesh secures an ICC tournament host role from 2028-2031, eyed for the U-19 World Cup.
Islam emphasized formalizing gains through an MoU. “A detailed, line-by-line pact will ensure no ambiguities,” he said, referencing a Dhaka ACC meeting precedent.
This convergence underscores cricket’s role in mending fences. Beyond boundaries and sixes, Colombo hosts a pivotal moment for Asian cricket’s collaborative future.
