The International Boxing Association (IBA) has officially inducted the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) as a full member, a decision ratified at its board meeting on February 6, 2026. Announced through a formal letter from Lausanne on February 9, this step underscores India’s rising stature in global boxing.
IBA chief Umar Kremlev penned a heartfelt note to IABF head Rakesh Mishra, commending the organization’s transparency, governance excellence, and passion for the sport. ‘Congratulations on securing full IBA membership,’ Kremlev stated. ‘Your commitment has secured a prominent place in our global family, and we look forward to your positive contributions.’
Emphasizing the mutual benefits, Kremlev noted that India’s inclusion would energize the international boxing landscape. Full membership unlocks participation in IBA-sanctioned events, fostering long-term collaboration between the two bodies.
IABF leaders celebrated the news as pivotal for Indian boxing’s growth. President Mishra highlighted the access to world-class training methodologies and exposure, while Secretary General Rakesh Thakran tied it to national goals under PM Modi’s Olympic-focused initiatives.
Thakran revealed strategic shifts: ramping up talent identification at the grassroots level and dedicated Olympic prep programs. With Minister Mansukh Mandaviya’s oversight, IABF aims for holistic athlete development and stronger showings in global arenas, particularly the Olympics.
