Bhubaneswar’s industrial powerhouse, NALCO, is charting a bold course towards capacity enhancement and sustainability. CMD Brajendra Pratap Singh disclosed that the company will add 0.5 million tonnes to its smelting capacity as part of the national push for Viksit Bharat 2047.
The Rs 30,000 crore investment under the 2030 plan includes a state-of-the-art smelter and 1,080 MW thermal power facility. DPR preparation is underway, with board nod expected soon, paving the way for groundbreaking at the Angul site.
Designed as a brownfield upgrade, this project addresses India’s growing aluminium needs with cutting-edge, low-emission tech. By 2030, it promises to elevate NALCO’s output while minimizing environmental impact.
Short-term priorities include activating the fifth alumina stream and kickstarting Pottangi mine operations this June. Plans also feature a new wire rod mill to diversify into high-value products.
Singh pointed out NALCO’s unique advantages: captive mines for bauxite and coal slash costs and bolster supply chain resilience, outpacing rivals in efficiency and profitability.
As India eyes self-reliance in metals, NALCO’s dual focus on scale and sustainability could redefine the sector’s trajectory, blending economic ambition with ecological responsibility.
