GAZIPUR, Bangladesh – A minor quarrel over banana leaves ended in unimaginable horror as 55-year-old Hindu businessman Liton Chandra Ghosh was savagely murdered in his own sweets shop. The incident, unfolding in Gazipur’s Barnagar area, underscores a disturbing pattern of violence against Hindus, with nine lives lost in just one month.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that the trouble started when 28-year-old Masum Mia stormed into Baishakhi Sweetmeat and Hotel, confronting a teenage employee over alleged theft from his farmland. Words turned to blows, drawing in Masum’s father Mohammad Swapna Mia and mother Majida Khatun, who arrived to support their son.
Liton, known locally as Kali, stepped in to defend his 17-year-old helper, only to become the primary target. Attackers wielded a sharp spade, delivering a lethal strike to his skull. Despite immediate local intervention, Liton succumbed to his wounds instantly.
Furious residents captured the perpetrators and delivered them to Kaliganj police. OC Mohammad Zakir Hossain detailed the sequence of events, confirming the trio’s custody and the initiation of murder charges. ‘The investigation continues, and justice will be served,’ he affirmed.
As Bangladesh grapples with this spate of targeted killings, community leaders call for heightened security measures and impartial probes to restore faith in the system. The loss of Liton, a respected local entrepreneur, leaves a community in mourning and demands urgent action.
