Violence against Hindus in Bangladesh has reached a boiling point, with another brutal murder exposing deep-seated animosities. Ripon Saha, 30, met a gruesome end at a Rajbari petrol pump when a politically connected driver plowed his car into him over a petty fuel payment dispute.
The Friday morning tragedy unfolded at Golonda Mor’s Karim Filling Station. A black Land Cruiser fueled up for 5,000 taka and attempted to leave without paying. Saha’s intervention turned deadly as driver Kamal Hossain accelerated, crushing him fatally before speeding away.
Authorities acted fast. Officer-in-Charge Khondkar Jiyaur Rahman of Rajbari Sadar Police seized the vehicle and arrested owner Abul Hashem, a former BNP district treasurer, at his residence. Hossain was nabbed in Banibah Nijpara. ‘Murder charges will be filed; this was intentional,’ Rahman affirmed to BDNews24.
Staff at the station painted a vivid picture of the assault, noting Saha’s desperate stand against the fleeing car. This incident is the latest in a string of 10 Hindu-targeted killings this month, following a stabbing in Feni and the discovery of Samir Das’s body in a crop field.
As Yunus’s interim administration grapples with stability, minority communities live in fear. India’s January 9 statement flagged the pattern of attacks, pressing for stern action. International observers and rights bodies decry the escalating persecution, demanding justice and protection for vulnerable groups.
