Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has exciting news for rail passengers: the first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper train is set to roll out soon in the state. This milestone will elevate the Northeast’s position on India’s high-speed rail map.
The announcement came amid growing demands for better connectivity. Vande Bharat trains, famed for their speed and luxury, have transformed day travel across the country. Now, the sleeper variant brings that experience to long-distance night journeys.
Sarma detailed plans for routes linking Assam’s capital to major hubs. Travel time from Guwahati to Delhi could slash by hours, boosting productivity for professionals and students. The train’s advanced features include aerodynamic design, automatic doors, and bio-vacuum toilets.
Government officials revealed that trial runs are in advanced stages. The Northeast Frontier Railway aims for a soft launch by year-end, pending final clearances. This project is part of a broader Rs 10,000 crore investment in Assam’s railways.
Why does this matter? Assam’s remote location has long hindered growth. Improved rail links will unlock potentials in tea, oil, and tourism sectors. Sarma noted, ‘Vande Bharat will bridge the gap between Northeast and mainland India.’
Passenger feedback from existing Vande Bharat services has been overwhelmingly positive. With capacities for over 800 passengers, the sleeper version will accommodate families and business travelers comfortably.
Infrastructure upgrades are underway at key stations like Guwahati, New Jalpaiguri, and others. Electrification of lines and signaling improvements ensure safety and efficiency.
As India eyes 100 Vande Bharat trains by 2025, Assam’s inclusion marks a proud moment. The state is not just catching up—it’s setting the pace for regional rail excellence.
