Jammu and Kashmir’s cricket selectors have made headlines by dropping fiery fast bowler Umran Malik from the Ranji Trophy camp. The 24-year-old, known for his express pace, was a surprise omission as the team announced a 25-member probable squad on Wednesday.

Malik’s journey from the streets of Jammu to the international stage was nothing short of inspirational. His IPL stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad and a T20I debut against Ireland showcased his potential. Yet, domestic performances this season have been underwhelming, with economy rates above 6 in limited-overs games raising eyebrows.

Replacing Umran are performers from the recently concluded domestic tournaments. Left-arm spinner Abid Mushtaq, who claimed 18 wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and hard-hitting batsman Suryansh Raina earn their call-ups. The JKCA emphasized a ‘merit-based selection’ policy, aiming to blend youth with experience for the grueling red-ball format.

The camp, scheduled from November 15 at the Bakshi Stadium, will feature specialized drills for batting, bowling, and fielding. Head coach Vikram Rathour, brought in to overhaul the setup, has a clear mandate: build a competitive unit capable of reaching the knockouts.
