In a tragic turn of events, the death toll from flash floods and landslides in eastern Indonesia’s North Sulawesi has risen to 16, with three others unaccounted for. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) confirmed the grim update as recovery efforts intensify.
Triggered by torrential downpours lasting several hours, the floods hit Sitaro Islands Regency at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Monday. Swollen rivers burst their banks, unleashing chaos across multiple districts.
Damage assessments paint a dire picture: 148 houses damaged in four districts, with seven reduced to rubble, 29 suffering major structural harm, and 112 with minor damage. While waters subsided by midday Monday, essential services like electricity and phone networks are still offline.
BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari stated in Tuesday’s briefing that 22 victims sustained injuries and are under medical care. Over 680 displaced residents are hunkered down in makeshift camps. At least 108 people from 35 families have been evacuated to secure sites.
The calamity also claimed five homes and disrupted key roadways linking East Siau and South East Siau. As Indonesia braces for more rainy season perils, officials have activated a two-week emergency phase through January 18, advising heightened caution and preparedness.
