Russia is aggressively pursuing a significant deal to sell its export-ready Su-57E stealth fighter to India, presenting an offer that extends far beyond simply delivering aircraft. The United Aircraft Corporation (OAK) has proposed a comprehensive package including extensive technology transfer, access to onboard system source codes, and a pathway for local assembly within India. This initiative aims to establish a complete ecosystem for India’s future air combat capabilities, according to Vadim Badekha, CEO of OAK. The Su-57E is being positioned as the sole aircraft capable of meeting the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) long-term requirements. The proposal outlines an initial phase of aircraft supplied directly from Russia, followed by licensed production in India. Furthermore, a parallel modernization track could integrate selected Su-57 technologies into the IAF’s current Su-30MKI fleet, offering a dual advantage of enhanced capabilities and gradual technological absorption. Russian officials highlight significant improvements to the aircraft since India’s withdrawal from the Fifth-Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) program in 2018, citing upgraded sensors, new weapon systems, and ongoing testing of the advanced ‘stage two’ Izdeliye 177 engine. This engine variant promises superior supercruise performance, a reduced radar signature, and better infrared signature management. OAK emphasizes that this is a full-fledged program, not just a purchase, designed to bolster India’s air power and align with the ‘Make in India’ initiative by fostering operational knowledge and independent maintenance capabilities. This renewed push follows President Putin’s recent visit to India, where defense cooperation, including the Su-57E and S-500 air defense system, was a key agenda item. While India has historically been a major Russian arms client, recent declines in procurement signal Moscow’s strategic need to retain India as a partner amidst global pressures and to ensure economies of scale for its own advanced weapon production. With its enhanced capabilities, comprehensive technology transfer plan, and local assembly prospects, the Su-57E presents a compelling proposition for India’s future air combat dominance.
