India’s star cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur has achieved a significant milestone, becoming the most successful captain in women’s T20 internationals. She surpassed former Australian captain Meg Lanning’s record on Friday following India’s commanding eight-wicket victory over Sri Lanka. This landmark win, her 77th from 130 matches, came in the third T20I of the ongoing series in Thiruvananthapuram.
Reflecting on the achievement, Kaur downplayed individual glory, emphasizing the crucial role of her team. “That is something I never thought would happen,” she stated in a BCCI video. “As a captain, you always aim to win World Cups or win series, but becoming the most successful T20 captain—that is something which I never thought, but I’m very grateful, and I would like to give all credit to my team.” She highlighted the team’s outstanding performance and expressed optimism about carrying this winning momentum into the upcoming T20 World Cup.
This record caps a stellar year for Kaur, who also led India to their first Women’s ODI World Cup title earlier in November. She spoke about the team’s strategic approach to T20s, focusing on aggression and raising their standards in preparation for the next World Cup. Kaur specifically lauded the bowling unit for their exceptional performance in the series against Sri Lanka, attributing the victory to their efforts. The two teams are set to compete in the fourth T20I on Sunday.
