A 20-year-old Indian doctoral student, Shivank Avasthi, was tragically shot and killed near the University of Toronto Scarborough campus. Police responded to reports of a shooting on Tuesday in the vicinity of Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered Avasthi with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities stated that the suspects fled the area before law enforcement could apprehend them. The campus experienced a brief lockdown as police conducted an intensive search. This incident marks Toronto’s 41st homicide of the year, fueling anxieties among students. Concerns have been raised regarding campus safety, citing issues such as inadequate lighting, a lack of surveillance cameras, and insufficient security measures, which students claim to have previously reported. The limited information released about potential suspects and the motive behind the attack has further exacerbated feelings of insecurity, particularly for students attending classes or exams during late hours. Shivank Avasthi was also a valued member of the University of Toronto Scarborough cheerleading team, remembered for his uplifting presence and support during practices. The team expressed profound sorrow over his loss, highlighting his ability to bring smiles and his integral role in their team.
