A promising Indian doctoral student, Shivank Avasthi, was tragically shot and killed near the University of Toronto’s Scarborough Campus. Toronto Police discovered Avasthi with a gunshot wound in the Highland Creek Trail area on Tuesday, where he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed profound shock and anguish over the incident, confirming they are in close contact with Avasthi’s family and providing all possible assistance. This marks the second violent death of an Indian national in the region within days, following the earlier homicide of Himanshi Khurana, also an Indian citizen. The Consulate stated they are fully cooperating with Canadian law enforcement to ensure a comprehensive investigation into Avasthi’s death. The incident prompted a temporary lockdown of a nearby university campus, highlighting ongoing concerns about community safety and campus security in the area. Authorities are appealing for public assistance, requesting any dashcam footage or information related to the suspects.
