Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has reassured the United States that the upcoming general elections will proceed as scheduled on February 12. This commitment comes amidst a backdrop of significant unrest and attacks targeting minority communities. During a call with US Special Envoy Sergio Gor, Yunus emphasized the public’s strong desire to vote after years of suppressed democratic rights. The conversation, which lasted about thirty minutes, also touched upon trade relations, the democratic transition, and the recent killing of young activist Sharif Osman Hadi. Yunus stated that the interim government is fully prepared to manage any challenges and is dedicated to ensuring a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process. He also noted allegations that the previous regime’s supporters are heavily funding efforts to disrupt the elections, with their fugitive leader reportedly inciting violence. The successful negotiation of reduced US tariffs on Bangladeshi goods was also highlighted as a positive development. The meeting was attended by Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin, National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman, and SDG Coordinator Lamiya Morshed.
