President Donald Trump has expressed significant optimism regarding the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, stating that a peace agreement is “closer than ever.” These remarks come in the wake of crucial diplomatic discussions held in Berlin, which involved European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The US President, speaking from the White House, underscored the robust support the United States is receiving from its European allies, including key nations like Germany, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Poland, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and the Netherlands.
Trump highlighted the collaborative effort, noting, “We are going to get it done. I think we are closer now, and they will tell you they are closer now with numerous conversations with President Putin of Russia. And I think we are closer now than we have ever been. We want to save a lot of lives.” He acknowledged the intricate challenge of synchronizing Russia and Ukraine’s timelines and terms for a potential resolution, explaining, “At this moment, Russia wants to get it, but the problem is they will want to end it, and all of a sudden they want it, and Ukraine will want to get it ended and all of a sudden they won’t. We have to get them on the same page.”
The diplomatic push follows extensive talks in Berlin aimed at de-escalating the protracted conflict. Reports suggest European officials have agreed to participate in providing security guarantees for Ukraine, though the status of disputed territories remains a major hurdle. President Zelenskyy had previously indicated Ukraine’s willingness to defer its NATO aspirations in exchange for solid Western security assurances. Despite these diplomatic efforts, the conflict persists, with recent reports of drone attacks from both sides, underscoring the urgency for a lasting peace.
