The mother of Naveed Akram, a 24-year-old accused in the Bondi Beach terror incident, has expressed disbelief at his alleged involvement in violence. Speaking outside her home, Verena Akram described her son as a quiet, disciplined individual who preferred staying home and avoided negative influences. She last spoke with Naveed just hours before the attack, during which he reportedly told her he was in Jervis Bay for a short break with his father.
During their conversation, Naveed mentioned going for a swim and scuba diving, adding, “We’re going to eat now, and we’ll stay indoors because it’s very hot.” The father and son had previously informed their family about a fishing trip planned for Australia’s South Coast.
Verena Akram stated that her son was unemployed and lived a very simple, routine life. She firmly rejected any notion of him being associated with extremist or violent activities, asserting he did not own firearms and rarely went out. She emphasized his clean lifestyle, free from drinking or smoking, and characterized him as a model son.
The tragic event occurred during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, resulting in 15 fatalities. Naveed Akram was apprehended at the scene, while his father, Sajid Akram, was fatally shot by police, bringing the total death toll to 16. Authorities indicated the victims succumbed to the sudden and brutal nature of the assault. Naveed Akram is reportedly a Pakistani national.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese vehemently denounced the incident as an act of “pure evil,” antisemitism, and terrorism on Australian soil.
