In a significant move to bolster national security, India is reportedly planning to acquire five additional S-400 air defence squadrons. This multi-billion dollar deal, potentially worth Rs 56,000 crore, is expected to be a key discussion point during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on December 5th in New Delhi. The decision comes as global strategic realities shift, highlighting the increasing unpredictability of aerial threats, as evidenced by recent conflicts and regional tensions. India’s existing S-400 fleet, acquired in 2018, has already proven its effectiveness, notably during Operation Sindoor where it demonstrated an impressive engagement range. Doubling the fleet would dramatically enhance India’s capability to counter advanced aircraft, missiles, and drones, solidifying its air defence posture against potential adversaries like China, which currently operates six S-400 squadrons. The deal also includes provisions for a substantial missile purchase to support these systems and potentially an MRO hub in India for maintenance and upgrades, underscoring a deepening defence partnership.
