A disturbing incident has rocked West Bengal, where a female doctor was allegedly assaulted and threatened with rape at the Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay Government Medical College and Hospital in Uluberia. The attack occurred on Monday, stemming from an altercation between the doctor and relatives of a patient. The victim promptly filed a police complaint, leading to the swift arrest of three individuals: Sheikh Samrat, Sheikh Babulal (a Home Guard serving as a traffic cop), and Sheikh Hasibul.
This shocking event, echoing the brutal rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata last year, has reignited a fierce political debate. The Joint Forum of Doctors has expressed grave concerns regarding the safety of medical professionals during their duty hours. Opposition parties, particularly the BJP, have criticized the ruling Trinamool Congress, pointing to the incident as a failure of governance and safety protocols. State BJP leaders emphasized the growing insecurity for women in the state under the current administration, referencing the previous tragedy and highlighting a perceived lack of effective security measures, including CCTV surveillance.
The Trinamool Congress has condemned the assault, acknowledging the arrests made and calling the incident unfortunate. However, they have also pushed back against the BJP’s criticisms, questioning the opposition’s focus and highlighting instances within opposing parties.
