Authorities have apprehended three individuals in connection with the brutal gang-rape of a second-year MBBS student from Odisha in Durgapur, West Bengal. The distressing incident occurred near a private medical college where the victim was studying. Legal proceedings have commenced with charges filed against the accused for gang-rape and related offenses involving common intent.
The 23-year-old medical student, hailing from Jaleswar, Odisha, was reportedly attacked late Friday evening. According to initial reports, she was out for dinner with a friend near the college premises when a group of assailants intercepted them. The victim was allegedly dragged into a secluded wooded area behind the college and subjected to the horrific assault before the perpetrators fled the scene. The arrested individuals’ identities have not yet been publicly disclosed.
This shocking crime has escalated national concern, prompting the National Commission for Women (NCW) to intervene. The NCW has formally requested a swift and thorough investigation, the immediate apprehension of all involved, and assured comprehensive support for the survivor’s medical and psychological well-being. A senior NCW official is expected to visit Durgapur to assess the situation and review police progress, with an update on actions taken demanded within five days.
West Bengal Police have assured the public that the victim is in recovery and receiving adequate support from her family and authorities. They have also cautioned against the dissemination of unverified information. The police department has reiterated its firm commitment to a zero-tolerance stance against crimes against women and pledged to ensure justice for the survivor by bringing all culprits to account.
