A bizarre incident has emerged from the Bemetara district of Chhattisgarh. An 81-year-old woman approached the Bemetara Collector’s office to prove she was alive, stating, “Sir, I am alive; do not consider me dead.” The woman, identified as Shail Sharma, a resident of Kirna village near Narayanpur, alleges that her own family members fabricated a death certificate to seize her late husband’s property. She claims that her husband owned 30 dismil of land in Maihar Road, Satna, MP, which was looked after by her daughter-in-law. Recently, the land was transferred from her husband’s name to the daughter-in-law and her daughter, leading to objections from the victim’s grandson and elder son. Upon inquiry at the SDM court in Satna, a shocking discovery was made: the 81-year-old Shail Sharma was declared dead in 1993, with a death certificate issued from Maro Chowki, Bemetara. This deceit, allegedly orchestrated by the daughter-in-law for land, has left the elderly woman in a precarious situation. Further, the woman has recently traveled abroad, highlighting the absurdity of her situation. The administration’s response to this case remains to be seen, and the resolution to restore her legal status is awaited.
