Gaur Gorakhpur Lions, the team owned by politician-actor Ravi Kishan, secured their fifth victory in the UP T20 League 2025. This win came against the Kanpur Superstars, the league’s bottom-ranked team, in a match played on August 31st. The match was decided by a super over that consisted of only five balls. The details of this unique super over format, and the exciting match itself, are detailed here.
The match between Gaur Gorakhpur Lions and Kanpur Superstars ended in a tie. The match was reduced to 15 overs per side due to rain. Gaur Gorakhpur Lions batted first and scored 141 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their 15 overs. In response, Kanpur Superstars also scored 141 runs, losing 5 wickets in their 15 overs, leading to a super over to determine the winner.
Kanpur Superstars batted first in the super over. Their captain, Sameer Rizwi, had scored a quickfire 75 runs in the match and was expected to perform well in the super over. However, Gaur Gorakhpur Lions’ bowler, Abdul Rahman, dismissed him with an LBW on the first ball. After Rizwi, Abhishek Pandey took a single on the second ball, and gave the strike to Adarsh Singh. But on the third ball of the super over, Adarsh Singh got out in the same manner as Sameer Rizwi, without scoring any runs. In just three balls, Kanpur Superstars’ super over innings came to an end.
The Gaur Gorakhpur Lions then had a clear, and relatively simple, target. Akshdeep Nath and Prince Yadav opened for them and chased down the target of 2 runs off the Kanpur Superstars bowler Vineet Pawar in just 2 balls of the super over.
