Vodafone Idea (Vi) has forged a strategic alliance with AST SpaceMobile, a US-based company, to introduce direct-to-cell satellite-based mobile broadband technology across India. This move positions Vi as the latest major player in the private telecom sector to venture into space-based communication, following Airtel and Jio’s earlier deals. The collaboration aims to extend mobile broadband services to underserved rural and remote areas lacking traditional cellular networks.
Under the agreement, Vi will manage terrestrial network integration, spectrum access, and market access, while AST SpaceMobile will oversee the satellite system’s development and operations. The partnership is expected to unlock opportunities in various sectors, including emergency response, disaster management, and agriculture, while also contributing to the government’s Digital India initiative.
