Shreyas Iyer’s stellar performance in the recent IPL season has ignited speculation about his potential role as captain of the Indian white-ball team. Despite his team, Punjab Kings, not clinching the IPL title, Iyer’s leadership skills were evident. He led the Kolkata Knight Riders to victory the previous year, and his omission by the KKR management was surprising. Now playing for a new franchise, Iyer has displayed remarkable prowess as both a batsman and a captain. Sources indicate that Iyer has officially entered the race for white-ball captaincy.
“Right now he just plays ODIs but after this IPL we can’t keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus he also has now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race,” a source shared.
In the 2025 IPL season, Iyer showcased his batting skills, securing the second position among his team’s top run-scorers. He scored a total of 604 runs in 17 matches, averaging over 50 per innings with a strike rate of 174.69. His highest score of the season was 97 runs against Gujarat Titans. Additionally, Iyer has a strong record as a captain in both T20 and List A matches, with his teams winning a majority of the games played under his leadership. He is also the only captain to lead a team to 3 finals in the White ball format.
