The Union Ministry of Education, in a letter to AMU, said that the President of India, in her capacity as Visitor of AMU, is pleased to appoint Professor Naima Khatoon, Professor/Principal, Women’s College, as the Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University for a period of five years. . The university had no full-time vice-chancellor since Tariq Mansoor’s tenure ended in April 2023.

Naima Khatoon has been working as the Principal of Women’s College of AMU since 2016. Her appointment to the post of Vice-Chancellor was challenged in the Allahabad High Court in November 2023 on the grounds that her name was shortlisted by a committee headed by her husband Mohammad Gulrez. Who was serving as the acting VC of the university, but the petition was rejected. The case was again challenged in the High Court and is pending.

Khatoon, an AMU alumnus, did her schooling in Odisha and transferred to AMU, where she studied psychology at the undergraduate and postgraduate level in 1981 and 1983 after completing her pre-university degree. According to the AMU website, he was later awarded a PhD in psychology in 1989. He has also authored or co-authored six books.
