SFA statement
Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said in a statement, “The Hong Kong-based Center for Food Safety has issued a notification regarding the recall of Everest Fish Curry Masala imported from India due to the presence of ethylene oxide. SFA has directed importer SP Muthiah & Sons to initiate a mass recall of the products. Ethylene oxide is not authorized for use in food.
People advised to get tested
The FSA said, “There is no immediate danger from consuming low levels of ethylene oxide, but long-term consumption can cause health problems. Consumers who have purchased the products in question are advised not to consume them. People who have consumed the products should seek medical advice. “Consumers can contact their shopping center for enquiries.”
health hazard
The SFA said, “Ethylene oxide is commonly used to prevent contamination by microorganisms in agricultural products, but its use in food is completely banned. “Despite the use of ethylene oxide in spice sanitisation being permitted in Singapore, the high levels of it in Everest Fish Curry Masala pose a potential health risk to consumers.” Everest has not yet commented on the matter.
