Shah Alam. Indian women badminton players secured their first medal by registering a 3-0 win over Hong Kong in the quarter-final match of the Asia Badminton Championship. After defeating top-seeded China to top the group stage, India led by double Olympic medalist PV Sindhu and Ashmita Chaliha as well as the doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto defeated Hong Kong. Now India will face the winner of the second quarter-final between top seeds Japan and China.

Returning after injury, Sindhu defeated her lower ranked Lo Sin Yan Happy in a tough match 21-7, 16-21, 21-12. Women’s doubles pair of Tanisha and Ponnappa then defeated world number 18 pair of Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam 21-10, 21-14 in 35 minutes. After this, Ashmita defeated Yung Sum Yee 21-12, 21-13 and gave at least a bronze medal to the team.
