Taking steps in this direction, the Chhattisgarh government has prepared new avenues for self-reliance of women in Gauthans under the Suraji village scheme, while in Vananchal tribal areas, women have been connected with forest produce collection and its processing. As a result, 83,874 women from 11,187 self-help groups of the state have got employment in Gauthans. About 4 lakh 50 thousand women groups are associated with the collection of minor forest produce. With this, tribal and rural women have also got a new identity in the society along with economic independence. Seeking new markets for the products, and expanding the possibilities already existing in the market, while increasing the participation of women in the total production of the state is part of the strategy. Under this, local products capable of competing with the price and quality of products of foreign or multinational companies available in the market are being produced through women self-help groups at the village level. The state government is an ally in the entire process from branding to marketing of the products. This approach draws strength from Mahatma Gandhi’s ideas of Khadi and Swadeshi for women empowerment.
