PM Modi expresses pain at loss of lives due to lightning, announces financial aid

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed pain at the loss of lives in various parts of the country due to lightning and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased.

At least 18 people died in Rajasthan and 10 in Uttar Pradesh, according to reports received on Sunday night, and the toll could go higher.

Casualties have also been reported from Madhya Pradesh.

In a tweet quoting Modi, the PMO said, “Saddened by the loss of lives due to lightning in parts of Madhya Pradesh.

The prime minister also expressed anguish at the deaths caused by lightning in two other states and announced similar relief.
