CBSE class 12 board exams cancelled in light of pandemic

In view of the uncertainty arising due to the pandemic in the country, the class 12 board exams have been cancelled for this year. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that such exams should not be the reason to put youth at risk and added that the health and safety of students are of utmost importance.

Students although will be given a chance to take the exams if desired, and the board will conduct it when the situation becomes conducive. 

The PM had earlier held a review meeting with stakeholders to discuss whether the class 12 board exams need to be conducted. The officials had given a detailed presentation on the extensive consultation they had carried out with various stakeholders including state governments. 

On stating that the pandemic has affected the academic calender adversly and that anxiety over the conduct of the board exams have taken a toll on students, parents and teachers, he said the issue must be put to an end. 

Adding that the stakeholders need to be sensitive to the students regarding the issue, the PM directed the officials to ensure that the results are prepared according to a well-defined criteria, and in a fair and time-bound manner. 

The decision comes after over 30 states and Union Territories had requested the Union Education Ministry for a shorter version of the class 12 board examinations at home schools.

The CBSE and CISCE have been contemplating on cancellation or going for alternate assessment routes or going ahead with truncated format. 

On Tuesday, India reported 1,27,510 fresh COVID-19 cases, the lowest in 54 days, while the daily positivity rate dropped to 6.62 per cent, according to the data updated by the Union Health Ministry.

India’s tally of coronavirus cases stands at 2,81,75,044 with the fresh cases.
